3D/2D Atrist

JHT is seeking a 3D artist with 2D skills to join our training system development team in Orlando, FL. This team is engaged in development of game-based, 3D virtual training systems for a DoD customer.


Direct Supervisor(s): Graphics Manager, Program Manager

Job Summary:

Applies a full understanding and capability in 3D modeling, texturing, rigging, and animation in the creation of game-based, 3D virtual training systems. Candidates must possess experience via either independent work or school projects. Professional game development is ideal but not required.


Applies a solid understanding of digital illustration principles and capabilities to create line art for use in technical publications. Candidates will also be required to utilize Photoshop to create images for use in training media, consisting of editing and collaging photos, and creating informational diagrams.


Must present an online portfolio of relevant 3D and 2D artwork for consideration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. 3D

    1. Adheres to an asset pipeline for integrating 3D models and textures into Unity 3D

    2. Creates both high and low poly models, rips clean normal maps from high poly assets

    3. Generates normal maps from high poly assets

    4. Applies understanding of UV layout for efficient texture usage

    5. Creates textures with a PBR material authoring tool such as Quixel or Substance Painter (preferred)

  2. 2D

    1. Use photographs, technical drawings, and other reference material to create and modify line art

    2. Adhere to military standards (provided) in the creation of all 2D line art assets

    3. Work with technical writers to provide artwork that illustrates the text with callouts, leader lines, and exploded views when necessary

    4. Use provided 3D assets, when available, to create line art by rendering from appropriate programs

    5. Use existing photographs as source files to create collages

    6. Modify existing photographs when necessary to remove or add elements

    7. Use Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator to create informational design elements, such as diagrams and conceptual illustrations


Security Clearance: SECRET, or capable of obtaining and maintaining US Department of Defense (DoD) secret security clearance. U.S. Citizenship is required.


Education / Experience:

Requires Bachelor’s degree  in Multimedia and Animation, Computer Animation, Digital Arts and Design, or Game Art, or equivalent education and experience with a minimum of five years of relevant art development.

Required Skills:

  1. Proficient with at least one major 3D package like 3DS Max (preferred), Maya, or Modo

  2. Proficient at retopologizing, UV & texturing assets from reference

  3. Experience with polygonal optimization and LOD creation

  4. Experience with asset pipeline, integrating 3D models, textures etc. into Unity 3D

  5. Experience with the creation of simple rigged body and rigged animations

  6. Proficient with Adobe Illustrator (preferred) or Inkscape

  7. Proficient with Adobe Photoshop (preferred) or related software

  8. Strong attention to detail, good communication skills, and a proactive nature

  9. Ability to work in a team and to integrate director feedback quickly

  10. Flexible to changes in production and able to shift focus between a range of tasks

  11. Ability to finish tasks within a given time frame


Preferred, but Not Required Skills:

  1. Perforce CM Tool suite experience (HelixCore, HelixIM, HelixRM, HelixTM)

  2. Experience developing Unity-based simulations for the Department of Defense (DoD) or DoD subcontractors.
